Another visitor to the farm...

What is it?

It was a perentie... he wound up in the front room of the farm... he startled Dave as much as Dave startled him! We have seen its' footprints all around the house and farm recently.
Perentie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perentie

Amazing looking creature. Wrinkly, too.

Funny footprints.

Smaller than a house.
We managed to put aside all the busy work this weekend and get out to the national park before all the tourists come. We went to Osprey Bay.

It was a mainly rocky beach.

This was the view from our campsite!

Dave and I tried fishing off the beach there. I won, I caught seaweed. It was still nice! Then we went for an early morning snorkel at Oyster Stacks. Now back to the daily grind!

*I still haven't figured out whether to caption the photos before the photo or after. I think I have been commenting after each photo... so I will try to stick with that! I think!

Visiting the farm

This creature was hiding under the work desk when I was using the phone. I called David to come and fetch it and put it outside! The scorpion was a bit grumpy- probably because I came close to kicking it!

One of the dangers of leaving the work fence open is that anything (and anyone!) can wander right on in. These two emus visited yesterday. Dave had to shoo them away- a daunting task as both emus were taller than Dave!

You can see our house in the back of the second photo.

Chickens poo eggs??

Every Friday two chickens come and visit the Early Childhood area- they have a special transportable mini-coop. The children enjoy patting and holding the chickens with the science assistant, and checking for eggs, and just watching them doing their chicken-y thing.

One of the girls in my class came and asked me a very serious question. She's not a very chatty girl (at least not to me!). Her words are in red, mine in blue, just to make reading easier.

"Mrs. Prangnell, the chicken did something!"

So we walk over and have a look. "What did it do?'

"It was over there, and something came out of its' butt."

"What do you think it was?"

"I think it did a poo!"

"You're right, it did a poo, and you got to see it!" She was happy and wandered off.

A little while later, she came back and told me she thought the chicken was laying an egg because it was sitting there and shaking a little. (I looked, it was sitting and breathing). This obviously got her thinking, as she came up a little while later and asked...

"Where do chicken's eggs come from?"

So, I told her it was like pooing, except chickens have a special place where eggs come out. It was the best I could do at short notice! I mentioned it to her dad, just in case she decided to let them know that chickens poo eggs.

Later she came up to tell me that the chicken stepped in its poo.

Things behind the house...

We've been seeing a lot more octopuses behind the house recently. (I googled it, it is octopuses... not octopi!)

This first one had a good spot between some seaweed. It was content to let us take photographs, even with flash. He did a good job blending in!

He did keep an eye on us, though.

This octopus was in a shallow pool with no place to hide, so he was a bit cranky. He made 'angry colours' and squirted water at us when I tried to take photos.

I love low tide behind our house- it reveals so many things!
