Following along the theme of the popular Reasons my son is crying blog and the post 46 reasons why my three year old might be freaking out we introduce... Reasons my two year old is having a tantrum*...
(*Asher really is a mellow child. His tantrums involve a peaceful protest laying on the floor, or a screech, a cry or knocking over something in annoyance. It is more that his tantrums are caused by the unexpected and unexplained things. All this didn't happen in one day, by the way, this list covered nearly a month!)
Reasons My Two Year Old is Having a Tantrum
- he has a booger up his nose
- there is a hair on his toy
- mommy is singing
- there is something in between the slices of bread in his sandwich
- we won't let him continually flush the toilet
- he doesn't want his train turned on
- Mommy came to get him when he woke up
- Grandma wanted cuddles
- his sock has scrunched up in his shoe
- the sprayed himself with water
- he woke up
- he couldn't take his plane to bed
- he had to put shoes on to go outside
- Auntie Mimi isn't here RIGHT NOW!
- we wouldn't let him go in the car with Auntie Mimi
- he wasn't allowed to hang off the side of the shopping cart
- Daddy is asleep
- we stopped him from pulling everything off of a shelf in the grocery store
- he couldn't splash in the puddles in the middle of the road
- he had a hair in his mouth
- he missed getting the ball in the hoop
- Daddy put his shoes on and Asher didn't see him do it
- we wouldn't turn a corner in the car (as we were driving on a straight stretch of road)
- we didn't have popsicles

February Asherisms
Asher managed to get my stick deodorant's lid off and applied it to his armpit- on his shirt!
~
When he really wants something or wants to do something, he puts his name in front of it and pronounces it with concentration... Asher water! Asher on! (Asher wants to turn the light on). Asher Raaarrr (Asher's dinosaur).
~
He put on my gardening gloves and wandered around the backyard trying to pick things up with them.
~
He would prefer me NOT to sing... he says no, no, no and pats my leg. If he is out of reach he waves his hand at me, no no no!
~
The last few nights at bedtime, as we are reading, Asher would ask for "lalalala." I had no clue what he was talking about! He'd just say, "lalalala" over and over again until I distracted him. Today I figured out he was asking for this book, Moo Baa Laa Laa Laa.
"A cow says MOO."
"A sheep says BAA."
"Three singing pigs say LA LA LA!"
"'No, no!' you say, 'that isn't right.
The pigs say OINK all day and night.'"
Asher does all the animal noises (including the La La La)!
~
He definitely knows blue. If you ask him which is the blue one. he will definitely get it right. But... toddler style... since he hasn't worked out the names of the other colors, he will call them blue, too.
~
Today he asked, "Where is the blue?" It was up to us to figure out what blue thing it was. He was looking for the blue party blower thing that came in Mom's birthday flower arrangement. That blue.
~
New game- We each have sticks. We throw the sticks into the bush. I retrieve them. Repeat.
~
Asher watching bugs in the backyard: The bug crawls under a leaf, Asher says "bye bye!" The bug crawls back out, Asher is in fits of giggles and clapping.
~
I found Asher laying on his back in the backyard today, trying to convince the dog to do the same so he could pat his belly. Speaking of which, the dog lets Asher feed him pecans.

Asherisms
I have been working on getting Asher to say his name. He does, Asher style.
Me: "What is your name?"
Asher "Asher... yay Asher!" while holding his finger on his chin.
The finger-chin thing is from me trying to show Asher how to pronounce "f." And what do you say when Asher says his name correctly? You say "yay Asher!" So, that's how Asher became "Asher... yay Asher!" with his finger on his chin.
When you ask him how old he is, he proudly says "three!" (He's two). If you ask him to say two, he sometimes will. Last time I corrected his age (two not three) he said, "No... three!"
...
Asher found some dandelions in the yard few days ago . Later that afternoon they started closing up, and I told him they were going to sleep. So he helped them close up, then laid them flat on the ground, told them to go to sleep (he made snoring noises), and stretched out on the grass beside them and pretended to sleep!
...
When I tell him, "I love you" he just giggles.

Asherisms
He's a bit anatomically challenged!
.
- Asher has started beeping when he backs up.
- He kisses things he likes, including waffles and his toy plane.
- Today's toddler-invented game involved me sitting hidden around the corner, and Asher comes around the corner, and I say "boo," Asher falls over, I fall over, Asher leaps onto me, and says "more boo! more boo!" And we begin again.
- Asher has discovered mailboxes (living in Exmouth, we never had a mailbox he could check, only a PO box). Dad leaves the junk mail in it for him and he loves to open it!
- He has worked out the difference between a sneeze (achoo) and a burp (bup!) but thinks a cough is a burp.
- We can have complete conversations without me knowing what he is saying.
- If he wants me to go somewhere, he grabs my hand and says "walk!"
- If he is pushing something, he says, "the push!"
- He asks for his Daddy continuously, all day. Dada? (Dada's not here.) Door? (Yes, Dada went out the door.) Car? (Yes, Dada's in a car.) And most recently, plane? (Dada's not in a plane, yet).
- He likes to feed the dog acorn and pecans. The dog will chew on them, too!

Asherisms
Asher has figured out how to blow bubbles!
At the moment, if you ask Asher "What does a frog say?" His response is to wave his arms in the air and say (in a 21 month old's garbled way) "lah dee dah dee dah." I need to get this on video before we teach him what a frog really says!
Asher opened a drawer in the kitchen and took out the two boxes of ziploc bags- snack sized and sandwich sized. He took all the bags out and put them on the couch, and put the empty boxes in the rubbish.

January Asherisms
If Asher wants my attention, he will pull at my feet until they are pointed in his direction, then wave his hands as if to say "I'm down here!"
Asher talks to the ceiling. I like to think he's chatting with God. But perhaps he just likes the ceiling.
He has started bringing us books to read to him. Often he'll pull them off his bookshelf and look at them himself.
He loves putting things IN things. We find bits of food tucked in places like my bag, behind a toy in a bookshelf, in Dave's sports gear. He likes transferring balls from one container to another.
We are discovering his sense of humor. For example, his "baby vogue" game- sitting very still, then suddenly flinging his arms up in the air and grinning and giggling. It is like he is trying to startle us or something, the baby version of hiding behind a door and saying "Boo!"
I was showing Asher how to put the shapes through the shape sorter. He watched and put two of the three in, and then took them out again. He looked at me, carefully opened the lid to the shape sorter, and put all the shapes in, then shut the lid.
He still hasn't figured out chasey. He sits there and lets us catch him. Sometimes he scoots at us.
When he pushes his toy cars around, he makes this sound- "Wuvwuvwuv!"
Instead of saying no, he says "nein." It seems Asher speaks German now.
He knows when he's doing something wrong. He'll put his hand on (our phone, the rocks in the garden, etc) and then just look at us. Sometimes he'll just hover his hand over it and wait for us to take it away. He doesn't protest.

December Asherisms
He's been babbling a lot more! His first definite word was ball, and he's added bird to that (though ball sounds like bah and bird sounds like buh). There is a mobile over the couch that has a boat on it, and he points to it and says bo, but we aren't sure if he means the boat or if he's calling the mobile a boat.
He's started saying 'ta' (Australian slang for 'Thank You') and handing people things. That's because whenever we hand him something, we say 'ta (thank you),' so he will say 'ta' when he is handed something. But being the clever boy that he is, he sees us handing him something and saying 'ta' so he hands us things and days 'ta.'
After a particularly amusing trip to the shops where Asher was smiling at all the ladies, we were all sitting around having lunch at the table. Asher was sitting in his high chair, babbling, and I asked him if he was a flirt. And he said, very clearly, "Yes!"
This morning, I had Asher in bed with me to try to squeeze a bit more sleep in (he's been waking up at 5:30 again). But Asher didn't want to be asleep, so was babbling and lifted up my shirt and started tickling my tummy. I said"tickly" and he liked the sound of that so he kept trying to say it "ti... tik.. uh... uh..." while still tickling my tummy. So we got up.
I was feeding him (inside) and some birds flew over the house and tweeted loudly, and Asher pointed excitedly at the ceiling and said "buh, buh!"
