We left Thursday for Karratha, and stayed in a caravan park there. The car was very full with things we forgot to pack in the trailer that went to Perth (baby clothes, curtains), things we thought we might use and couldn't be bothered giving away (half eaten boxes of cereal), and things we still needed after the trailer left but didn't need camping (electrical cords, etc). We stocked up on fresh food and water in Karratha. We visited the Burrup peninsula and Red Dog and all of that before driving to Millstream on Friday. Asher has had his afternoon naps in the car, and the DVD player was really useful. The day before we left Exmouth the we returned the double swag we were going to borrow and bought an inflatable queen mattress- which worked out better space wise and has been quite comfortable. The other thing that was really useful was a box of nappy liners we had from Asher's cloth nappies. We didn't use them often with his nappies- they had a tendency to scrunch up uncomfortably in his nappy. So we took them on this trip and used them for everything- like disposable washcloths, only smaller and thinner. They have been great.
Our campsite in Millstream was on the banks of the river, but a long fence seperated us from it- so it was safe for Asher. Our campground had a total of ten places in it, and we got the last one- a perfect spot, between the grassy area with picnic tables and barbeques and a campervan with a toddler and a 5 year old (whose name was Emily, and she drew cards for all of us). We had drinking water, but took water from the river or the stream for dishes and to bathe Asher in. (We just bathed in the stream- and it was COLD! But even Asher loved it!) The campsite was so shady and still, the water made perfect reflections of the trees and reeds and stuff. We had to drive to the places to hike and to visit, so we spent more time in the car then we expected. We probably could have spent a few more days there, just relaxing. There was one hill that we climbed where we had phone coverage- miles from anywhere! (But it was the highest in that range).
Monday we drove to Karratha to restock on food and water and to send a few quick text messages while we had phone coverage. The drive to Karijini was long- we were trying to get there in time to set up the tent and get unloaded before dark and before Asher's bedtime. So the drive wasn't too pleasant at the end but we got there. We camped at Dale's, which is walking distance from a lot of the sights. Dave had a swim, Asher had fun, lots of red dirt everywhere. They have lots of campsites- we were at #97! Karijini is amazing- the gorges literally take your breath away! We were able to do the class 2 and 3 walks with Asher in the Ergo carrier, and when he was napping in the car we took turns doing others (class 4 and 5 walks). We got a flat tyre Wednesday and went in to Tom Price to replace our spare tyre with a new one. So today is Friday, and we are staying in a room at a caravan park- what luxury! I went six days without a proper shower, thoug I did have a rinse off in Millstream, so we've all had a good shower and we also washed our laundry.
Tomorrow we drive to Carnarvon- our longest drive yet- to stay with our friend Jim. It looks like we will be headed into some rain! Then we will be in Kalbarri for a few days, then Jurien Bay a few days, then to Perth. The dates are negotiable. We aren't ready for our trip to end!
In the meantime, Asher has two new teeth- two canine teeth, top and bottom, on the right side. He's standing up and taking steps a lot more, too. And loving loving loving the dirt and the rocks. His favorite game at the moment is pretending to eat a rock and then grinning when Dave or I tell him not to. He doesn't put the rock in, he j
